Credit CARD Act Provisions Take Effect on February 22
Hard working Americans who make their credit card payments on time and have good credit should not see their rates increase without notice and without cause. Listed below are some key provisions of the Credit CARD Act: · 45 day notice before raising interest rates or other fees with option to pay off at current rates and fees (may increase monthly payment, close account) – other exceptions made such as variable interest rate, introductory interest rate, etc.; · Statements will include how long it would take you pay off your balance making minimum payment; · No rate increases for the first year with certain exceptions; · Increased rates that will only apply to new charges; · Must opt-in with your credit card company to allow over-the-limit transactions; · There is a cap on high card fees; · If you are under 21, must show ability to repay or have a cosigner; · Statements must be mailed 21 days in advance of due date, with same due date each month & No Double Billing; · Payments directed to the balances with the highest interest rates first (some exceptions when beneficial to consumer).
